Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli Slip in ICC ODI Rankings Ahead of Australia Series

It’s not the best news for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli as they gear up for India’s upcoming ODI series against Australia, which kicks off on October 19 in Perth. The two big names of Indian cricket will be returning to international action after a break of over six months. However, ahead of the series, both have seen a dip in the ICC ODI rankings.

In the latest rankings released on Wednesday, Afghanistan's Ibrahim Zadran has made a sensational leap, jumping eight places to take the number two spot. His brilliant performance in Afghanistan's 3-0 ODI series win over Bangladesh in Abu Dhabi has been a key factor. Zadran was the top scorer in the series, amassing 213 runs at an average of 71 and gaining 764 rating points.

This surge by Zadran means that Rohit has slipped to third place with 756 points, while Virat is now ranked fifth with 736 points, behind Pakistan's Babar Azam. Despite this, India's new ODI captain, Shubman Gill, retains his position at the top with 784 points as the series begins.

Meanwhile, in the bowling rankings, there’s more good news for Afghanistan. Rashid Khan has replaced South Africa's Keshav Maharaj to become the No.1 ODI bowler in the world, following his remarkable 11-wicket haul in the Bangladesh series. His performance included a stunning five-wicket haul in the second ODI.

Afghanistan’s clean sweep in the series was capped with a commanding 200-run victory in the final match.

On a more positive note for India, Yashasvi Jaiswal is climbing the ranks in Test cricket. The young opener has risen two places to the 5th spot in the ICC Test Batting Rankings after his fantastic knock of 175 against the West Indies in New Delhi. KL Rahul has also made a gain, moving up to 33rd place, thanks to his steady performances in the second Test.

In the Test bowling rankings, Kuldeep Yadav has achieved a career-best position. The chinaman bowler moved up seven places to 14th after taking eight wickets in the second Test against the West Indies. His brilliant spell was instrumental in India’s win, and he was deservedly named the ‘Player of the Match’ for his outstanding performance.

So, while Rohit and Virat might be facing a slight slip in the rankings, the cricketing world continues to evolve, with new faces like Zadran and Jaiswal rising to the occasion.
