Karun Nair Criticizes Ajit Agarkar After Team India Snub: “I Deserved Better”

Veteran Indian cricketer Karun Nair has openly expressed his disappointment over being dropped from the Indian Test squad, taking a dig at the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee for overlooking his recent performances.

One of the most consistent run-scorers in domestic cricket, Nair had earned a recall to the national side for the five-match Test series against England after scoring 1,533 runs in two Ranji Trophy seasons. Despite his hard work, the right-handed batter’s return to international cricket was short-lived.

Representing Vidarbha, Karun played a crucial role in their Ranji Trophy triumph, boasting a remarkable average in red-ball cricket. However, during the England tour, his form dipped as he managed only 205 runs in eight innings, including a solitary half-century.

These numbers weren’t enough for the selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, to retain him for the subsequent West Indies series or even the India A matches against South Africa A.

“It’s quite disappointing. After the last two years I’ve had, I think I deserved better — more than just one series,” Karun said during Karnataka’s Ranji Trophy match against Goa. “Of course, it gets to your head sometimes, but my job is to score runs and let others have their opinions.”

Despite the setback, Nair remains hopeful of a comeback.

“My only target is to play for India. If that doesn’t happen, I’ll continue giving my best to help my team win,” he added.

Meanwhile, chief selector Ajit Agarkar clarified his stance, stating,

“We expected more from him in England. He played four Tests and scored just one fifty. We’d love to give everyone 15–20 chances, but that’s not always possible.”

As things stand, Karun Nair’s domestic form continues to make headlines, keeping his Team India comeback hopes alive.
